Common Hypnosis Methods

Updated: Oct 8, 2023

There are several methods used in hypnotherapy, which are techniques used by a hypnotist to induce the hypnotic state and guide the person towards desired changes in thoughts, behaviors, or perceptions. Some of the most common methods include:

  1. Relaxation: The hypnotist may guide the person into a relaxed state by using verbal cues and suggestions, such as encouraging them to focus on their breath or imagine a peaceful scene.

  2. Eye fixation: The hypnotist may ask the person to focus on a specific object, such as a pendulum or a spot on the wall, which can help to relax the mind and reduce distractions.

  3. Progressive muscle relaxation: The hypnotist may guide the person through a process of tensing and relaxing different muscle groups, which can help to reduce tension and anxiety.

  4. Guided imagery: The hypnotist may guide the person through a visualization of a peaceful or positive scene, which can help to change negative thoughts or behaviours.

  5. Post-hypnotic suggestion: Once the person is in the hypnotic state, the hypnotist may give suggestions for changes in thoughts, behaviours, or perceptions that the person should carry out after the session.

  6. Age regression: The hypnotist may guide the person to think back to a specific event or memory from their past, which can help them to understand and overcome current problems.

  7. Self-hypnosis: The hypnotist may teach the person how to induce the hypnotic state on their own, which can help them to achieve their goals even after the hypnotherapy session is over.

It is important to note that not all of these methods are used in every hypnotherapy session and the hypnotist will choose the most appropriate methods depending on the individual and their specific needs.
